recommendations I like the why and how worksheet for the 5 components, but I would like a more detailed list of specific ideas.
this is my idea: Next year give the students a worksheet labeled with the 5 components with blanks beneath each sectoin. With each reading lesson that is presented, the students can write down a title (or brief description) of the activities for each component. By doing this they will have a list of activities by component to refer to when they need to do their own reading unit.
Using Silent Sustained Reading In The Language Classroom by: Elba Rivas De Whitle Sustain silent reading :
- A program designed to develop student reading skills and enjoyment in which a block of time is set aside each day for quiet reading.
•Helps vocabulary, comprehension and sentence structure
•Allows for major strides in language acquisition and literacy skills
-By getting books that are interesting in the target language, they allow students to read them and enjoy them.
•Get variety of easy to hard books
-Ensuring each student is reading, students would choose a book and reads it for 10 min each class period.
-Covers communication standards of the standards for foreign language learning.
-Reading books for the English language in the target language gives Opportunity for language comparison.
-Popular magazines and comic books
•Gives insights to cultural practices, products, perspectives and cultural comparisons.
Ex.
For 1st Year language class
-Silent independent reading can begin with snippets and gradually increase to longer reading periods. The teacher should :
•Pictures to aid understanding
•Humor to engage older students
•Lots of repetition of expression to build in practice.
•Oppertunities for students to discuss the assignment with their classmates.
Whites SSR program began with the belief that just reading in the target language could help students learn their desired language.
